Winter can be brutal on your skin if you are not taking the proper precautions.
If you’re like me, dry skin is SUCH an issue for me this time of year. I can also get red, flaky patches on my cheeks (basically rosacea) that can easily be irritated by makeup. A lot of people assume that slapping on some moisturizer is the answer. Not so. Taking care of your skin’s hydration from both the inside & outside is key!
I adjust my skincare routine during the winter months to add extra hydration. For the mornings, I use a mild cleanser followed by a hydrating essence. Do not skip using a toner or essence. It promotes hydration & lends nutrients to your skin’s moisture barrier. Eye cream is next & something you absolutely NEED. I suggest using this one from BeautyCounter or this one which is ultra hydrating.
I then use a few drops of my homemade “Glow” serum (a combination of jojoba oil, lavender essential oil, frankincense oil & copaiba oil). I’ll do a whole post on this concoction & how I make it next week! Using a serum with hyaluronic acid is also a must in this weather- it’s hydrating, plumping & is great for tightening pores. I would suggest using this plant based serum or one of my BeautyCounter favorites. Lock in all that hydration with a moisturizer & you’re good to go.
Now for night time, I suggest the same routine with the addition of a good facial oil (goes on after the serums but before the moisturizer). Using a facial oil is a MUST in my opinion. Even if you have oily skin- you need to use a facial oil. Having oily skin means that your skin is dry & is working overtime to hydrate it (therefore producing more oil than necessary). I use a combination of these two oils almost every night- Marina Brightening Oil & Aurora Superfood Oil. The holy grail of facial oils is this Organic Nourishing Facial Oil. I use this when feeling super dry- but at $92 a bottle, it’s safe to say I use sparingly!
Last but not least- if you buy any product, let it be the Summer Fridays Jet Lag mask. It’s super hydrating, can be used as a moisturizer or as an overnight mask (that’s how I use it). It’s great on all skin types & helps with not only hydration but uneven texture as well.
Just FYI- all my skincare suggestions are plant based & non-toxic. If you are new here, I only use products with clean ingredients on my skin & it’s been a game changer. You will most likely never find any drug store recommendations on here, although more & more brands are coming out with a “clean” line of products. Clean beauty & skincare is going to become the norm in my opinion. To shop my BeautyCounter store- click HERE.
Now along with the correct skincare- there are some other tips & tricks you should be doing to promote hydration!
Here are some more tips to battle dry skin:
- Drink LOTS of water! Drink at least half your weight in ounces every day (ex: if you weigh 150 pounds, you need to be drinking at least 75 oz. of water).
- Eat foods that mostly made of water (ex: celery, lettuce, cucumber).
- Take shorter showers with warm water (being in hot water for long periods of time totally dries your skin out & strips your skin of natural oils).
- Lotion up your body minutes after stepping out of the shower to lock in extra moisture.
- Exfoliate twice a week. Most people think this will be bad for dry skin, but you have to remove all the dead skin on the surface in order to promote a healthy, glow.
- Slather on chapstick day & night.
