Do you guys like personalized, beautiful snail mail just as much as I do?
Whenever I get a fancy invitation in the mail I get SO excited! I’ve always had a strange love for paper & pretty fonts. Learning calligraphy has also been at the top of my list of things to learn.
Well last weekend, one of my girlfriends & I took a calligraphy class in NYC. We found this company- Sip & Script– who travels mostly in the Boston/New Hampshire area to do “girl’s night out” calligraphy classes. Lucky enough we found their NYC class at the last minute & decided to go! The two owners of this adorable brand partner with local small businesses to create a cozy atmosphere filled with artisan cocktails, small bites & tons of fun.
Our event took place at Epistrophy in the Nolita neighborhood in NYC. This small intimate brick walled restaurant serves homey Italian food & hand crafted cocktails. This space was perfect for the event. Each ticket to this class included a signature cocktail- Panettone infused rum, fresh lime juice, fresh orange juice, ginger & popcorn sugar. This drink looked out of this world (still participating in Dry January over here!). I also ordered the 7 Grain Avocado Toast for a light bite & it did not disappoint.

The class started with an introduction on the tools used for calligraphy (we used legit ink to learn- no sharpies here!) and also the different fonts & lettering we would be learning that day. We learned basic strokes first, the different ways to write the alphabet (script alphabet & print alphabet) then practiced writing words.
You guys this was so hard in the beginning.

First just getting used to using the nib (metal point on the pen which you dip into the ink) was a challenge. You also have to know when to press hard & when to have a light hand. I feel like after I got the hang of it, I was really enjoying it. Like I legit want to address someone’s wedding invitations now!
The best part of this class was that we got to keep all of our tools & paper at the end. We got nice card stock paper to practice on as well as some fancy envelopes. I’m totally saving those until I get really good. Wouldn’t want to waste the paper!!

Overall, this class was awesome! I feel like I really learned a lot & have found a hobby that I want to continue with. Meg, the owner & instructor of our class was very hands on in teaching us. I can’t wait until Sip & Script comes back to NY area so I can attend another class. Check out their website for a schedule of all their future classes- it’s definitely worth checking it.
