I had the pleasure of attending a workshop a few weeks ago at Board & Brush in Norwalk, CT.
Board & Brush is a DIY wood sign workshop. There are endless projects to choose from: Welcome signs, personalized coat racks, holiday themed signs and so much more! Nestled in the heart of South Norwalk, Board & Brush is the perfect spot for girl’s night out! Grab a girlfriend (or several) & book a workshop.
Did I mention that Board & Brush is BYOB?? You can bring beverages of your choice plus snacks (trust me, you’ll want to- the workshop is 3 hours long). My friend Mariam & I of course enjoyed a bottle of wine while crafting our little hearts out.
So what is it that you actually do at Board & Brush?
First, you pick your project. You actually do this while signing up for the class via Board & Brush’s website. Mariam picked a Welcome sign & I picked a sign with a quote for my home office. Your project is picked beforehand so your stencil can be ready and waiting for you.
Just FYI, be prepared to make A LOT of choices during this class.
And ask TONS of questions. There are many samples of projects hung throughout the workshop to give you ideas. I picked a stain color based on a project hanging on the wall & it ended up being a stain plus a paint finish layered on top of that.
Back to business- the next part of the process is distressing your wood. This is the fun part. You get to take a hammer, meat tenderizer & numerous other tools to obtain the perfect amount of distressing on your sign. And don’t worry, you get a pair of ear plugs for this part! After you beat the crap out of your wood, you then sand down any jagged corners!
Next, you get to pick your wood stain. Also, take a peak at the paint finish options at this point as well. I wanted a grey finish for my wood- but was advised by the amazing staff at Board & Brush to pick the dark walnut stain with the khaki dry brush on top of it. This created the perfect weathered grey look I wanted. This is a process & you have to wait a bit for the stain/paint finish to dry. So totally don’t forget to bring wine! PS, some designs even require the use of power tools so be prepared for that!
Now the next part was fun- picking fun paints colors! There are a plethora of colors to choose from. This was my favorite part! I love the three colors I chose. After your paint dries, you then get to apply your stencil. This part is a bit tricky so don’t be scared to ask for help on this step! The instructors are AMAZINGLY helpful & will walk you through each step and will answer any questions you may have.
I am so happy with how my sign came out & I love the quote “Work Hard & Make it Happen.”
The whole process from start to finish was fun, engaging & a great night out. You can book birthday parties, private events, bachelorette parties and more! I am totally going back to Board & Brush to make more projects. If you are a big DIY fan, this place can be quite addicting! To book a session- click here.
Thank you again to Jackie & Marcie for this awesome experience. I will totally be back.
