First of all, let me just say that I absolutely love Liane Moriarty and her writing style. I’ve read pretty much all her books & I have to say….this one was my least favorite! Don’t get me wrong, it was a great plot & I enjoyed the character devolopement but I just thought it was a little slow in the beginning and dragged on at parts.
Quick summary in case you didn’t read the book: Six adults & three kids get together for a normal, family BBQ one weekend. But, a tragic event rocks all three families. I don’t want to spoil it for anyone! This book reviews all the facets of everyday life: relationships, friendships, marriage & parenthood. I like how Liane gave well-rounded, in depth backgrounds of each family however I just thought the story line was a little drawn out. I also really like the fact that switched back & forth between present day and the day of the BBQ.
I think this storyline was not only relatable but a real issue that could happen to any parents/family. It only takes two seconds for a parent to get distracted & something happen to your child. Liane not only spoke to that, but dove into what happened to the family and marriage after the tragic event. Which (SPOILER ALERT) wasn’t SUPER tragic in my opinion!
All in all, this book wasn’t bad- just way too long and drawn out. I’ll always take the time to read a Liane Moriarty book no matter what!
