I recently just read Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan (I know I’m late to the party on this one) and could not stop laughing. The over the top wealth of most of the families in this book was comical. The part with one of the character’s bachelorette party was one of the most out of control displays of wealth (read the book!!).
Rachel Chu was just a hard-working, Asian-American girl who fell in love with Nick Young, who she thought came from a humble family in Singapore. She agreed to spend the summer with his family in Singapore & was not prepared for what was in store for her.
Nick failed to tell Rachel that he was heir to one of the wealthiest families in Singapore. Hopping on private jets, owning multiple properties & buying couture clothes from the top designers was normal for his family. Rachel’s relaxing summer vacation soon turned into a disaster.
I felt this was an accurate depiction of how some families still operate in Asia. Families expect their children to marry or date people of the same “status” or net worth. Marriage isn’t about finding someone you love, but finding someone from a family who is on your level. Kinda makes me sad that this is the reality for some people.
The over the top opulence & humor definitely made this book a must read. I was laughing at loud through most chapters & was just completely stunned by the lifestyle of these characters. I’m totally going to read the next two books in this trilogy. I think I’m finally going to watch the movie as well- I heard it was one of the best comedies of this year!
I just read ordered this on Audiable can’t wait to hear it
